PACE/Dual Enrollment at CHS
Coastal High School offers the PACE/Dual Enrollment Program, allowing students to earn both high school and college credits simultaneously by taking courses at Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). This opportunity helps students take on more challenging coursework while getting a head start on their college education.
Why Enroll in PACE?
- Earn College & High School Credit – Students can begin taking college courses as early as 10th grade, with most starting in 11th or 12th grade.
- Reduce Future College Course Load – Completing college credits in high school lightens your workload in college, making it easier to maintain scholarships like LIFE.
- Improve Your College Applications – PACE coursework boosts your GPA and class rank, as grades are weighted like AP/IB/Dual Credit on the SC Uniform Grading Scale.
- Guaranteed College Credit – Successfully completing a course in one semester ensures college credit.
- Save Money on Tuition – SC resident students taking two classes (6 credit hours) per semester may qualify for Lottery Tuition Assistance, covering over half of tuition costs. Plus, HGTC tuition is 1/3 the cost of a four-year college.
- Smooth Transition to College – PACE helps students adjust to college-level academics while still in high school.
Who is Eligible?
High school juniors and seniors may be eligible based on:
✔ Parent permission
✔ School counselor approval
✔ HGTC placement requirements
✔ Overall GPA and academic performance
Students must complete the PACE Online Application for consideration.
How It Works
PACE offers two types of dual enrollment options:
✅ Dual Credit Courses – Count toward both high school graduation and college credit. These courses are taken during normal school hours and affect your high school GPA.
✅ College Credit Only Courses – Earn college credit without affecting high school graduation. These courses may be taken outside school hours, in the evening, or during summer sessions and do not impact high school GPA.
Private school and home-school students seeking dual credit must provide written confirmation from their school or home-school organization.
